Jobs

29th Street Publishing is building a mobile app platform that changes the way publishers produce, showcase, distribute, and monetize their work. Mobile app design is an always-evolving practice — we are constantly reinventing new ways to distribute and frame content, which requires deep collaboration across our design and engineering teams. At its best, our work disappears into the background and allows the publisher’s own content to shine.

We are an equal opportunity employer and we take diversity seriously.

How to apply:

Please email hello@29.io describing the work you’re most proud of and excited about; what you’d like to accomplish as part of our team; your resume (or a description of relevant experience); and any or all of the following: your blog URL, GitHub profile, Dribbble account, Twitter handle. Be sure to include a list of your favorite media (books, TV, movies, magazines, websites, etc), your expected salary range, two reference contacts, and your earliest possible start date.

Engineering Manager

The Engineering Manager will lead and mentor the engineering team to deliver user-friendly, responsive, and reliable mobile and web products. Making it easier for authors and publishers to connect directly with their audiences is core to our mission, and that is reflected in our focus to produce best-in-class content management, reporting, and reading software. You own the software production process — this includes writing code, managing a small and smart team of engineers, and making sure our software priorities match our business priorities.

You have led a range of challenging projects both large and small, from requirements gathering to implementation. You are performance-obsessed. You are comfortable collaborating with designers and developers while iterating in live environments with tens of thousands of active paying users.

You’ll be joining a team of polymaths with strong opinions about design, software, and grammar. You will report directly to the CEO and work closely with the GM and Senior Product Designer.

You must have:

  • An in-depth understanding of mobile and web development architectural concepts: You have experience with API-driven development, databases (mostly MongoDB and MySQL), and high availability web services (written in Perl or Python). You’ve shipped live apps at scale, and you are familiar with continuous integration and continuous deployment practices and tools.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills: Ideally you’ve helped build effective and highly collaborative teams in a startup environment. You’ve participated in an agile process with weekly sprints pegged to quarterly business and product goals. You can manage customer objectives against budget and time constraints while continuously identifying, communicating, and mitigating risk.
  • Experience leading the development process: You can design and implement best practices within an engineering organization, and have the ability to lead by example as a hands-on contributor. You are a leader and innovator — you foster your team’s continuous learning and offer unique and creative technical solutions to complex problems. You have an appreciation of “just enough” testing and research.
  • 5 years’ experience: 5+ years working in a product-focused environment. Ideally you’ve been one of the first 10 employees at a startup. You write code to one or more repositories every day, and deploy to production frequently. In a given week our engineering team commits code in Objective-C, Python, Perl, and HTML/CSS/JavaScript. If you’ve learned a couple of languages deeply, we’re confident you can learn the ones we use quickly.

Senior Product Designer

The Senior Product Designer is responsible for creating a coherent and delightful design language across our content management system, back office tools, mobile apps, and websites. Design drives our product and engineering priorities, and as product designer you will hold a leadership role in the organization.

You have led a range of challenging projects from product strategy through to visual design. You are equally comfortable guiding fellow designers and collaborating with other teams as getting your own hands dirty and supporting production. You’re not afraid to be playful. You are enthusiastic about publishers and makers, and your product and graphic designs create a canvas for others’ work to shine alongside yours. We work with publishers of all shapes and sizes, with audience sizes from tens to tens of millions.

You’ll be joining a team of polymaths with strong opinions about design, software, and grammar. You will report directly to the CEO and work closely with the GM and Engineering Manager.

You must have:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills: Great software products aren’t created by designers alone. You’re comfortable working with customers and teammates to gather the insights you need to make design decisions.
  • Experience leading a prototype-driven process: Our production ethos is smart, agile, and prototype-driven. We validate new concepts with prototyping tools, whether that’s using paper mockups or animated interactive ones (from Keynote to Origami). Prototype-driven development experience is a big plus.
  • 5 years’ experience: You’ve embraced the complexities of technology platforms to conceive and build intuitive software products (preferably native mobile apps). Your design work shows an understanding of what a product is most essentially meant to do. Your products speak for themselves while staying flexible enough to allow for a variety of use cases. Ideally you’ve been one of the first 10 employees at a startup.

iOS Developer

The iOS Developer will join our engineering team to build user-friendly, responsive, and reliable iPhone and iPad apps. Making it easier for authors and publishers to connect directly with their audiences is core to our mission, and that is reflected in our focus to produce best-in-class content management, reporting, and reading software. You own the architecture and foundational frameworks that takes our clients’ work from the web and InDesign (and anywhere else), and makes it sing on iOS.

You are fluent in Objective-C, and you’ve noodled in Swift. You are performance-obsessed. You are comfortable collaborating with designers and developers while iterating in live environments with tens of thousands of active paying users.

You’ll be joining a team of polymaths with strong opinions about design, software, and grammar. You will report directly to the Engineering Manager.

You must have:

  • An in-depth understanding of app frameworks and the APIs that are required to run dynamic, social iOS apps: You have experience with API-driven development, databases (mostly MongoDB and MySQL), and high availability web services (written in Perl or Python). You have experience integrating iOS SDK interfaces with external ones (we primarily use NewsstandKit and StoreKit). You’ve shipped live apps at scale. We have a multi-dimensional idea of “uptime” — our apps rely on multiple APIs for commerce, analytics, sharing to the web, and content updates.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills: Great software products aren’t created by developers alone. You’re comfortable working with designers, developers, and customers. You’ve participated in an agile process with weekly sprints pegged to quarterly business and product goals.
  • Experience participating in a team development process: You can work with others to maintain best practices within an engineering organization, and have the ability to lead by example as a hands-on contributor. You have an appreciation of “just enough” testing and research. You are not afraid of “breaking the build” in a continuous integration environment, but you’ll make sure it’s working at the end of every day.
